Catholic Burial Rites

There are three sacred moments within a Catholic funeral that focus on the Christian journey of faith, from baptism to death and eternal life, and offer unique opportunities for remembrance, comfort and expressions of devotion. The principal celebrations of a Roman Catholic funeral are:

The Vigil - The rite celebrated by the Christian community in the time following death and before the funeral liturgy. It is a time when loved ones show their respect and share their memories of the deceased.

Funeral Liturgy - Community's central liturgical celebration is the single movement beginning with the viewing, greeting of family and friends, and culminating in the prayers and farewell gestures at the cemetery.

Rite of Committal - At the conclusion of the funeral rites, it is the final act of caring for the body of the deceased member of the church held at the final resting place.
